Weekly Photo Challenge: Culture

I love this picture of my son and his friend. They both live in the same country, yet come from a different culture. They don’t seem to notice the cultural differences they just want to have fun in each others company.

My son has noticed that his skin is a different colour and he wants to be just like his friend. “Mummy I want to be aboriginal”.  There are just some things that I can’t arrange, sorry kiddo!!!

  1. I remember reading about a kid who saw a black man for the first time in his life. He yelled loudly that wow, that man is really well tanned. That’s because in Finnish language tanning is called browning and people are desperate to brown themselves over the brief summer we have. He had heard the word used and made conclusions. But this is technically true isn’t it? We were all brown once but got lighter the further up north we migrated. The ones who stayed kept their brown because they stayed in a climate that kept browning them. For that kid, the man was no different than him, just very, very well tanned. Which, he had heard all his life, was very desirable state to be in.
